James Montgomery and Bruce Marshall, friends since 1976, have been performing their unique brand of acoustic blues since 1994 and have been a fixture throughout the New England area ever since. They’ve earned a reputation for their ability to sound like an entire band with a simple acoustic guitar, harmonica and two lead vocal lineup. They draw on their formidable musical chops to create a full sound, with Montgomery’s trademark percussive harp fills and soaring solos supported by Marshall’s alternate rhythm and bass guitar parts sandwiched around innovative lead guitar licks. Don’t expect to find any drum machines, sequencers or backing tracks with this act! The pair did many shared bills in the 80’s with their respective bands and decided to put the duo together after a chance encounter at the House of Blues in Cambridge in the early 90’s. Their first show was a few weeks after that with The Band at the State Theater in Providence, RI.
Their set list consists of original material as well as classic blues chestnuts by Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Junior Wells, among others. Both members have had years in the business fronting their own groups and the interplay and chemistry between the two is infectious, both musically and personally. Their hard work and talent has not gone un-noticed as the duo has opened for BB King on two occasions, including a show during his 70th birthday celebration at the Capitol in Concord, NH, and more recently at The Hampton Casino Ballroom. They’ve also supported and jammed with George Thorogood, Southside Johnny, John Hiatt, The Band, Marshall Tucker, Peter Frampton, Blue Man Group, and headlined at blues and folk festivals. They have 2 CD’s on ATM records, “At the Capitol Center”, and “Fit For a King”, both live sets opening for BB King.
In recent years, they’ve also put together some memorable electric shows, most recently at the famous Ioka Theater, BB Kings at Foxwoods Casino, and assembled special talent for the philanthropic side project “James Montgomery & Friends” with the likes of, Stu Kimball, Shorty Billups, Charlie Farren, Danny Klein, Johnny A, Andy Pratt, the Boston Horns and many others. The duo has also been featured on numerous radio shows, high profile benefits, and print reviews. Future plans include a new CD, and a tour overseas. Montgomery and Marshall are also available with a percussionist and continue to rip it up wherever they go and are a crowd favorite in the acoustic blues idiom.
