Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) was borne from a now-fabled performance in 1958, in which Ailey and a group of young, black, modern dancers performed at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The Company has since earned a reputation as one of America's most acclaimed cultural ambassadors. The Company's newest outside initiative is the release of a two-CD box-set of music from the Ailey repertoire. Blues, jazz, gospel, poetry, contemporary, folk, West African drumming, and R & B - all has been fused with the brilliant choreography of the Company to create a feast for the senses. Revelations features music from what is perhaps Ailey's best known work, while A Musical Retrospective highlights the diverse cultural inspirations behind other works from the Ailey oeuvre, with contributions from Otis Redding, Dizzy Gillespie, Donny Hathaway, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Laurie Anderson.
