More than 50 years ago, The Chicken Box was founded by Willie House, a native Kentuckian employed on Nantucket. The name makes sense when you realize that House opened the joint to sell fried checken. From a successful chicken joint, a jazz and blues club was born, and House ran it through the 70's.
House sold the club to Robert "Cap'n Seaweed" R. Reed, who vowed to maintain the club's atmosphere and feel. Reed did, however, begin to bring new styles of music to the Box, and over the years, the Chicken Box gained a reputation as the venue where top-notch Reggae bands performed.
On May 10, 2000, the Captain sold the Chicken Box to new owners, some of whom are former employees and a couple of friends. New ownership - same commitment to a Nantucket landmark.
Simply a great place for live music.
